Chapter 16

Cole drove like a local, all honking horn, jerky acceleration, and no regard for any other road user. Not what I’d expected from an Englishman, even a Londoner. He’d clearly driven here before and knew his way around the city, never once referring to the on-board sat-nav. Starving journalist who can’t afford to live in Paris, my peachy butt! This guy knew the city better than I did, and he spoke better French than me.

Paris never slept; night time traffic was as bad as during the day, but once we’d cleared the city centre and its ring road and got onto the A4 it quietened considerably. I knew this road intimately and not because it was the main artery to Disneyland either. Roman’s house lay off this dual carriageway. As did his lab.

I kept expecting to leave the A4, but the nearer we came to the turn-off which would lead to Bussy-Saint-Martin, the more uneasy I became. It was as if the bodies were a trail of breadcrumbs leading us to… where?

Stop being so daft, I told myself; the killer was probably focused on Mickey Mouse and his pals, and it would only be a matter of time before he left a body right outside the gates. Then he would be dubbed the Disneyland Desecrator or something. Or else he would be caught before that.

The car left the A4 at Bussy-Saint-George. Far too close to where Roman and I lived. For all my logic, I continued to feel unnerved. Surely it couldn’t be a coincidence. Or was paranoia raising its sharp little head? That’s the problem when you had a secret, you were always on the lookout for discovery.

I forgot to breathe for too long as he negotiated the roundabout and only remembered when the car carried straight on and not left towards Bussy-Saint-Martin and the place I called home, for want of a better word.

‘Who phoned you?’ I asked, speaking for the first time since we left the bar when surprise at his invitation had made me mute as I tried to work out why he wanted me to tag along. After running around in mental circles I decided it was because he liked me, vampire pheromones and irresistible vampire charm aside. The thought was flattering. I liked him too. He was different to the humans I’d had contact with since my resurrection, though to be fair, they had all been enthrallable and I had viewed them as food. Mostly.

Cole was my first non-enthrallable human. I wondered if they were all like him.

‘A source.’ He kept his eyes on the road as he guided the car into the heart of Bussy-Saint-Martin and down its main street, searching for a body.

Flashing lights were a giveaway. Cole got us as close as he could before a gendarme sent us down a side-street. The Rue James de Rothschild was cordoned off.

Cole found a space and threw the car into it. He even parked like a local.

‘Quick,’ he said, opening his door. He reached for a camera on the backseat.
